Getting Sick While Black…

Quick story- I have a scalp condition. It went undiagnosed for 10 years (10 YEARS)… I went to 7 dermatologists in the Greenville, SC area over the course of those 10 years, not one of them would touch me. The had me open up my hair and point to the area, took a look and shrugged their shoulders. THEY WOULDN’T TOUCH ME!! Because I have great insurance, they all prescribed this or that, gave me steroids, etc, but NONE of them cared about me or the fact that I had a bald spot growing in my otherwise long hair. I finally gave up & figured it was un-treatable, hey- 7 docs couldn’t figure it out (maybe it’s stress, I thought)… My sister pushed me to go to her Latina dermatologist in Philly. She felt around, did her thing, & diagnosed me right away. Yes, Dr. Gonzales is the bomb, but you mean to tell me that she’s smarter than 7 other BOARD CERTIFIED dermatologists? Btw, my scalp condition is pretty common. But it’s been so long, I may never get the hair to grow back fully in that spot. Yeah, I’m pissed. So please miss me when folks start in on how “all lives matter” cuz my black one sure doesn’t when dealing with healthcare professionals.#blacklivesmatter

Unfortunately, this is the norm for us…
